Unique skills ｢個有能力｢ユニークスキル｣, yunīku sukiru｣ are skills that are born as the expression of the mind, emotions, and desires of their user.

Characteristics

Unique skills, like their name would suggest, offer their user access to a completely unique power different to that of ordinary magic or skills. They're the manifestation of the mind brought about only when a strong individual is filled with strong desires and emotions, usually after overcoming a trial or experiencing some sort of growth.

The act of traveling between worlds whether its via summoning, accident, or reincarnation are prime examples when someone given a higher chance to obtain unique skills, because of the conditions and aftermath when successfully cross over worlds also fulfill the criteria to awaken unique skills, making Otherworlders highly sought.

The abilities they offer their user are varied and different from skill to skill, even skills with similar abilities or names will operate under completely different mechanisms and result in differences in performance. Of those who awaken unique skills, only around 10% of them possess powers that have an apparent utility in combat.

While unique skills are useful abilities that are perfectly suited to their users, very few are ever able to unleash the true power of them. Those that ignore that unique skills are mirrors into their minds and neglect that significance, only ever seeing them as useful tools or weapons to be used, will never manage to bring out their full potential.

Unique skills are capable of being rooted in the user's body or being rooted within their soul. Regardless of where it is located, possessing a unique skill is said to offer its user a certain level of resistance or immunity to lower-level abilities, even the effects of other unique skills. The ones rooted in the soul in particular offer a high level of protection, especially against abilities that affect the mind such as Tyrant, Greed, and Chosen One. In the most extreme cases, it is possible for a soul-rooted unique skill to act as a replacement housing for consciousness in place of the soul.

Due to their nature as the shape of their user's mind, unique skills will grow and change as they themselves develop and mature. For example, Hinata's unique skill Usurper originally bore the name "Robber" when she acquired it, and it later changed to "Surpasser" after finding out the truth behind Luminism and undergoing the Trial of the Seven Luminaries. The pinnacle of this phenomenon is the birth of an ultimate skill, which is the result of a soul-rooted unique skill being nurtured with strong emotions and energy over a period of time, along with various other unknown conditions, to crystallize into the ultimate power.
