Kaedeカエデ, kaede, lit. "Maple"」 is the founder of the Tengu tribe and the mother of Momiji.

Appearance[]

Kaede is a large, beautiful, canine-eared woman with waist-length white hair. In her youth, her white hair – much like her daughter – faded to red at the tips, but as she aged, it turned completely to white. Her attire consists of a yukata with dark geometric patterns.

Personality[]

Kaede, as the elder of the Tengu, is a strong-willed and graceful person. As a mother, she is loving and slightly playful, teasing her daughter in matters concerning romance. She preaches to Momiji that a good woman is one who "makes her sweetheart turn back toward her". Due to nearing the end of her lifespan, she worries greatly about the future of her daughter and urges her to find a partner.

Background[]

Kaede was originally an Angel that fell to the Central World and came to incarnate within the corpse of an Okami, becoming the progenitor of a brand new race called the Tengu.

Some time after obtaining a physical body, Kaede roamed the land and eventually encountered Byakuya Araki in the village of the Ogres, becoming his apprentice and learning the ways of the sword alongside his unnamed grandson who was younger than her. Byakuya grew old and passed away over the years, leaving his grandson who became a master of the sword that grew to surpass Kaede in technique. Smitten with him, Kaede confessed her feelings under a large maple tree, and the two consummated their love over a night together. She left the village afterwards, unbeknownst to the ogre that she would carry his child.

Kaede gave birth to the ogre's child after 300 years and named her Momiji, draining most of her remaining power in the process and leaving her weakened. Unable to continue in her duties as chief, Kaede passed on the role to her daughter who was the most powerful and capable of her children.
